Yes: Most canker sores are minor and self limited but if it persists, your doctor may help you with pain medications and other supportive medications.

Abcesses: Absolutely! it sounds as if you have an abcess. Does the canker sore resemble an elevated blister? The fact that your discomfort is associated with a specific tooth is consistent with an abcess, that should be treated by your dds or another dental specialist. Call your dentist today. Perhaps he will start you on medication (ie. An antibiotic) today in preparation for treatment tomorrow.

Canker sore: Canker sores normally heal by themselves in 7-10 days. Their appearance is flat and whitish-grey in color. If the area is swollen, if there is any discharge, if the tooth hurts to bite on it, then i agree with dr spector that it may be an abcessed tooth. If it doesn't get better in 7-10 days, see your dentist.
