As a psychiatrist: I try to avoid use of antidepressants in patient with manic depression due to the risk of flipping into mania, hypomania or a mixed state.

Caution: Diagnosed bipolar affective disorder should not be treated with antidepressant alone due to risk of mania. Anti manic medication is needed to reduce this risk.
