Musculoskeletal pain: In the chest wall, there are muscles, cartilage and bone, etc. When you have a cough, you can injure any of these structures. Injury includes muscle strain/sprain, cartilage inflammation and rib bruise or even fracture. All of these can be painful. The good news is, as the cough resolves, the injury will heal and the pain will resolve. If the cough worsens, see your doc for diagnosis/treatment.

Multiple possible causes may be: heart attack, esophageal reflux, anxiety, musculoskeletal, pneumonia, pulmonary embolus, and aortic dissection.
