A member asked:

How long would it take for amoxicillin to get rid of a tooth infection ?

Perhaps never: If the infection is mild and no abscess has formed it should respond very quickly, assuming that the bacteria causing the infection are sensitive to Amoxicillin (which is quite likely). If more than 48 hrs have passed without improvement strongly suggest you go back to the dentist for reassessment.

Several days: You should always take antibiotics until the bottle is empty - often the signs of infection are gone long before your body is finished fighting it off. For a tooth, it depends on what part of it is infected. Typically, 7 or 8 days.

Depends: If the cause of the tooth infection is originating in the root canal system, no antibiotic is going to get rid of the infection. It will possibly reduce the symptoms but the only way to get rid of the infection is to treat the root canal infection. The antibiotic will not reach the bacteria within the tooth because the "pulp" no longer has a circulation to carry the drug to the bacteria.

See a dentist ASAP: The tooth infection won't go away without treatment and the infection may spread to your jaw, cheeks, sinus and to other areas of your body. Dentist will treat a tooth abscess by treating the cause and getting rid of the infection. Do not delay. Good luck.

It won't: No antibiotic will totally resolve a tooth infection.. the cause of the infection needs to be determined and treated. Antibiotics will minimize the symptoms and will help prevent it from spreading. Please see a dentist for proper care.
