Arthritis spur: An osteophyte is a bony overgrowth or arthritis spur causing either narrowing of the spinal canal or causing pressure on a nerve.

Rarely a problem: Osteophytes are bone spurs which commonly form as the spine ages, a type of internal re-enforcement. They do not usually cause trouble unless they start pressing on a nerve or the spinal cord.
