A member asked:

I'm curious as to how someone "gets" cancer. does it have to be carried down through generations in the family?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

It is spontaneous: It is commonly not carried through generations(with a few exceptions). It happens when the cells are damaged by chemicals or by an accident of nature. So it occurs during our life time as it takes 10 to 20 years from the time of cell damage to the time it shows up as a visible cancer.
