Two different things: A filling is an artificial substance that can be used to restore shape and function to a damaged tooth. Depending on degree of damage other procedures used to restore teeth are: inlays, onlays, veneers and crowns. If a tooth is too badly damaged to be restored, then it is extracted (removed).
