Please help! what is the name of the test (and the purpose) that the eye doctor gives you when you look into the machine and push a button whenever you see a spot?

Visual field: This sounds like a visual field test. This tests measures the level of light your eye can see in the side vision, or periphery. Many eye and brain problems can cause defects in peripheral vision; so this test is used to discover and monitor for these.
