Not necessarily : If your doctor gave you the choice of mastectomy or lumpectomy, you should know there is no survival difference between the two. Mastectomy removes all breast tissue, meaning the risk of cancer coming back in that breast is almost zero. Lumpectomy doesn't remove the whole breast, so there is a chance of cancer recurring in the breast. Either way, survival is the same.
