Disc not causing it: The protruding disc is unlikely to be the direct cause of pain in the legs or even in the back. It can start the pain, but then the pain is usually due to muscle spasm. Spasm of muscles around the sciatic nerves or its roots is what is causing pain to radiate down the legs. Physical therapy, over-the-counter pain meds and heat usually will take care of it.
