Depends: Sounds like sleep paralysis. During sleep your body alternates betw rem (rapid eye movement) and nrem (non rapid eye movement. During rem sleep your eyes move quickly and dreams occur but your muscles are very relaxed. If you become aware before the rem cycle has finished you may notice that you can not move. Talk to your doctor if this happens often you may want to schedule a sleep study.

Needs to be checked: It is not normal and you should get it checked by your doctor, to find the cause. You will need a comprehensive history and physical exam and may include blood and urine test and if indicated other tests.
