Varies: When the HCG is dropping, the production of that hormone is decreasing as the syncytiotrophoblasts (placental cells) die off, which is what needs to happen for the miscarried pregnancy to be completely gone. If the HCG stops dropping or begins to rise, those cells are persisting and have to potential to grow and spread - that is a type of cancer. That patient needs to be treated asap.
