Small stroke: A lacunar infarct refers to a small stroke (size wise). However because of their location in the brain, where lots of nerves are crossing over (think major highway interchange in your city), they can sometimes cause major problems. The thalamus is a deep brain structure that is responsible for sorting lots of signals in the brain.
