Retinal detachment: Repair surgery is usually outpatient, done under local anesthesia and often involves the use of a gas bubble to tamponade any retinal breaks. It requires a trained staff, a specialized operating room equipped with a stereo microscope and a vitrectomy machine. Some patients develop cataract after retinal surgery. Success/prognosis depend most on cause of detachment and whether macula involved.
