Months: Silicon oil is used as a vitreous substitute after retinal surgery. Over the long term it can cause corneal opacification, glaucoma, cataract, and emulsification of oil. These effects may require earlier removal. An unstable detachment or hypotony may require later removal. If things are stable after a month, surgery could be done then. Individual risks vary. Please discuss with your surgeon.

3-8 months: Removal depends upon the success of the re-attachement and whether the oil stays in place or migrates and causes problems. Discuss you situation with the retinal surgeon who put in the oil on you r next visit.
