Insulin and type 1: Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune loss of the b-cells of the pancreas, which make insulin. If you do not take insulin, you will get very sick, waste away, and eventually die, which is what happened before the discovery of insulin. A t1dm patient needs Insulin in doses that mimic the food intake. A proper diet and exercise is important (for all of us) but there is no substitute for insulin.
