Orthognathic surgery: Another name for orthodontic surgery is "orthognathic" or "jaw straightening" surgery. Other synonyms are maxillary (upper jaw) osteomy or mandibular (lower jaw) osteotomy.

Depends on what type: Each type of jaw surgery is termed differently. If the lower jaw is involved, it is either a mandibular set back (moved backward) or a mandibular advancement (moved forward). Both may be types of 'sagital split' types of surgery. If the upper jaw is involved, it can be a two or three piece 'la forte' proceedure whether moved forward, backward, or even intruded. As an oral surgeon.

Orthognathic: If surgery is required to aid in resolution of your malocclusion, your Orthodontic Specialist will work with an Oral Surgeon. Jaw surgery is called Orthognathic Surgery, and there are a wide variety of surgeries available based on your need.
