Abscess: If the tooth nerve is dying due to decay it will form an abscess. Best to get the tooth treated with a root canal and crown. Note that on an xray if the decay is 1.5mm or less from the nerve the tooth will abscess.

It can..: And most likely will. The temp keeps food from getting caught in there, but the tooth needs definitive care. Please make an appointment.

Possibly: If there is a temporary in your tooth, the dentist may have placed it because the decay, etc. Might be close to the nerve (pulp) or he/she wanted to see how the tooth was going to react without placing a permanent filling yet. There is still a high probability of an abscess. Since this was an "emergency" dentist, you need to establish yourself with long term care from a regular dentist soon.

Correct: Dr bassman is correct on all counts. An abscess is a cavity where the infection has reached the pulp chamber (nerves, blood vessels, etc.) of the tooth. The infection can easily spread. Temporary fillings are after sedative, slowing the spread of the decay before it reaches the pulp chamber. For the situation to be resolved the temporary will have to be removed and the tooth 'fixed.".

No: A temp filling just prevents food impaction. Definitive treatment is needed to treat. Go to your dentist!
