A member asked:

I was wondering what are the most common medications and/or compounds used in general anesthesia?

Volatile anesthetics: General anesthesia is commonly initiated with propofol, an intravenous anesthetic, to render the patient unconscious. General anesthesia is then usually maintained with inhaled volatile anesthetics through a breathing tube. Opioids and other medications may be used to supplement the volatile anesthetic during general anesthesia.

Multiple: You need something for amnesia (propofol, etomidate), analgesia (fentanyl, meperidine), muscle relaxation (not always required: rocuronium, vecuronium), nausea and vomiting prevention (ondansetron, dexamethazone), maintenance of anesthesia (desflurane, isoflurane).
