Does pathology routinely test for amyloid? recently had thyroidectomy and have smoldering myeloma so would like amyloidosis to be ruled out.

Ask your doctor to h: Your doctors can help you sort it out. Amyloid is not routinely tested unless there is reason to do so. Your thyroid and myeloma problem have no medical relationship in terms of amyloidosis.

Not routine: A special stain for amyloid is not routine for thyroid. However, amyloid can be seen on routine slides, so if there is a fair amount of it, pathologist can see something, but special stain is needed to confirm it is amyloid. important that the pathologist knows the medical history, so can be on the lookout for amyloid, which is not common and can be subtle. You can call MD and ask to make sure.
