Contusion and ...: X-rays are needed to rule out fractures first. Other than that, it's soft tissue. Is it the inside or outside of the ankle? If you can walk, it's highly unlikely that it's a fracture but it needs quick attention.

Pain: Anything described as severe pain needs to be evaluated. Don't wait - injuries always take longer to heal (if at all ) without help . See your podiatrist for an exam and x rays
