More serotonin helps: I do not think it is possible to provide a definitive answer to "what causes social phobia, " though it is an anxiety spectrum disorder that may be related to some kind of early trauma that triggers anxiety in social situations. Cognitive behavior therapy and/or a medication that increases serotonin can often lead to partial or even complete remission of symptoms of anxiety and social avoidance.
