How do a root canal and getting a filling differ in terms of pain?

Pain: Root canal therapy and getting a filling are both usually pain free for the procedure. Afterwards, you have a greater risk of some discomfort with root canal therapy. Having said that, most patients tell be that had no pain (or slight discomfort for the first day) following root canal therapy.

No difference: If adequate anesthesia is present and there is no infection at the tip of the root of the tooth, then there should not be any difference between the two procedures, other than the length of time it takes to perform the root canal.
