Biliary disease: Viewed very simplistically, there are 2 types of liver diseases--hepatitis (involves liver cells) ; cholestasis (bile backs up). Bile ducts can become inflamed due to variety of disorders; obstructed due to stones, parasites, tumors, stenosis, or ampullary ;/or pancreatic diseases. The gallbladder can be viewed simplistically as an extension of bile ducts ; "cholecystitis" is a sick gallbladder.

Bile duct: Diseases of bile ducts include obstruction by stone, cancer cells, or infection (cholangitis). Bile ducts are within the liver, so it is considered a liver disease.
