Not just one cause: A meningocele is related to spina bifida-a neural tube defect that occurs during the first trimester formation of the brain and spinal cord. Sometimes this may be due to a deficiency of Folic Acid or genetically determined (including spontaneous mutations). This incidence of recurrent spina bifida goes down with supplemental Folic Acid as supervised by an obstetrician.
