Different principles: Bariatric procedures can be divided into 3 principle effects, causing malabsorption of nutrients, by restricting stomach size or a combination of both. Gastric band and balloon are restrictive, while gastric bypass is considered to be a combination of restrictive (small stomach pouch) and malabsorptive (bypassing portions of the digestive tract that absorb calories and nutrients).
