B12 harmless: Vit B12 will not harm you as the extra B12 is excreted harmlessly by the body. Ideally you should have your blood level of B12 measured to see if you really need to take it. People who take ppi medications like Prilosec should take B12 under the tongue. Also people without stomach acid present will not absorb B12 when taken orally. Those people have to take B12 under the tongue or by injection.

Probably won't hurt: But may not help. Vitamin B12 is important for the functioning of every cell in the body. It is only available in animal products as plants cannot make it, so if you are vegan it is important to supplement with vitamins. There are many other reasons to take it - long term antacid use is one thing that can lower B12 absorption. Some people need methyl b12, the active form . See mthfr.Net.
