Very: Salmonella: pathogen (disease causing) bacteria, can cause severe diarrheal illness, severe dehydration, other problems. Some types cause typhoid fever (not common in U.S.). Dirty water, and contaminated food mostly. Spread fecal/oral source is mostly undercooked eggs and poultry. Even if most isn't contam, assume it is. Don't share utensils, cutting boards for cooked and uncooked. Wash hands.

Yes: Salmonella is spread by the fecal oral route from infected animals or humans. Food and water borne spread after contamination is common.
