Variable: If you start noticing the need for more medication to control same level of pain, fear and panic when you dont take the meds at the same time, sweating, fever and tachycardia or rhinorrhea when off the medss then addiction is present.

May vary: If used prn (as need it) the cut off is 3-4 weeks. It is also suggested that the opioids, be prescribed on a scheduled, "around-the-clock" (atc) basis for chronic nonmalignant pain. Any long-term use of this medication should be tempered by the potential for dependency and addiction.
