Gum disease: The cause of gum disease is the accumulation of hardened bacteria on the roots of the teeth. Treatment requires the removal of this debris as well as daily flossing and brushing. Gum disease puts you at higher risk for heart attack, high blood pressure, stroke and diabetes, in addition to the loss of your teeth.

Unfortunately ...: Unfortunately there is nearly nothing you can do at home to eliminate gum disease. Your goal is to have it treated by a dentist and then follow meticulous home care to keep it maintained. Good luck!

See your dentist: Treating gum disease is a shared effort between a dentist and a patient. You should have the dentist provide you a plan of action which often include deep cleanings ( scaling under the gums) and a home plan to keep the deposits from going back under the gums. Depending on the severity of your case you may need some kind of surgery. So don't put it off, there is no magic cure to gum disease!

No cure, sorry: It is a chronic disease, which we can make better and manage, but it usually doesn't go away forever. The only known 'cure' is to pull out the involved teeth, but please don't do that if at all possible.

Not DIY: Gum disease takes a partnership of you, your Dentist or Gum Specialist, a Periodontist, and their hygienist. You can't d this by yourself. With proper professional care your disease can be controlled, and you can be taught to manage it, but you must start with professional care. Please don't put this off...go now.
