A member asked:

Is it possible there are childhood infections/diseases cause diabetes?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Yes: One of the accepted pathways to type 1 dm is an infection by a virus that attacks the Insulin producing cells of the pancreas, leading to gradual loss of Insulin production.Other kids may get the same infection but never suffer from the same pattern of injury. Why it attacks some kids and not others is not known.
