A member asked:

Can you tell me about a bad reaction to propylthiouracil (ptu)?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Rash, liver, WBCs: Ptu (propylthiouracil) is a type of sulfa drug, so the most common side effect is a diffuse rash on the body. Occasionally it can affect the liver and cause inflammation. Periodic monitoring of liver tests is recommended while on the med. Rarely, it can lower one type of the white cells, increasing the risk of infection. We check the wbcs if one develops a fever or bad "cold" while on the med.
