A member asked:

Is it possible that a person with graves disease be able to take medicine all their life such as ptu (propylthiouracil)?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Possible: It is possible to take ptu (propylthiouracil) indefinitely but generally not recommended. Most people with graves disease are treated with antithyroid drugs for a maximum of 2 years. If you remain hyperthyroid after that time, definitive treatment with surgery or radioactive iodine is recommended. There are few studies looking at the long term effects of taking ptu (propylthiouracil) for many years.
