Chiari malformation: A chiari malformation (the arnold is no longer used) occurs a part of the lower brain herniates through a hole at the base of the skull called the foramen magnum. Symptoms that can occur with this are severe headaches, particularly at the base of the skull. Neck pain is often associated with it.
