Takes 24-48 hours: For an antibiotic to be effective. Also an antibiotic will only help shrink the infection. It will not eliminate it. You must either have root therapy or an extraction for this tooth in order to eliminate the infection. Sometimes an infection needs to drained in addition to antibiotic use. If it has been longer than 48 hours and the swelling still has not gone down you should be reevaluated by dds.
