Risk only: Missing appendicitis causes infection and may cause death. The potential/ future risk of a blood cancer is considered worth the risk. Ct for non-urgent reasons due to convenience, should be avoided and ultrasound or MRI used instead.

May be needed: Who said it is a bad idea? Yes there is exposure to radiation which may not be necessary and an ultrasound may work as well. But if that was the only way to determine appendicitis, that is the better option.
