Does being in a wheelchair cause ulcers?

Not necessarily: It was determined in the 1950's that pressure sores are not an inevitable result of being wheelchair dependent. There are many things that must be done, though, to prevent them. Just a few are: the right cushion, periodic wheelchair pushups to relieve pressure, and daily examination of pressure points. This requires a lot of effort from the patient and his doctor, but it is worth it!
