Caffeine: in Mountain Dew can increase risk of developing ulcers. There is valve between the stomach and esophagus called the gastroesophageal (GE) sphincter. Normally, this valve closes very tightly to keep stomach contents from going back up (reflux) into the esophagus. Caffeine, nicotine, and alcohol all lower the pressure that keeps the GE sphincter closed. Reflux can lead to development of ulcers.
