Usually..: .. A referral to a specialist is made when the dentist treating you feels the procedure is beyond the scope of his/her practice and skills. Some dentists can perform surgical extractions, others refer everything out.

A difficult removal: Oral surgeons have more complex instrumentation for removal of teeth in difficult positions.
