DO HAVE TMJ: If your jaw clicks and you have pain, you have symptoms of tmj/tmd. Even clicking or popping without pain signifies that there is a misalignment with the TMJ complex and it should be evalauted asap before locking or other symptoms may appear.

See an orthodontist: Long term, the literature shows that those who get treatment have the same outcome as those that do not. That said, a full coverage hard occlusal splint will unload your joints and relieve the pain. But, make sure you see a specialist to rule out any pathology such as tumors, autoimmune diseases (eg. Rheumatoid arthritis), etc.
