Time, hydration: Don't take hydrocodone before driving, going to work, taking care of children, or anything that requires alertness. It takes time for your body to metabolize it. Drinking fluids can help. If a person can't be woken up after taking hydrocodone or any other narcotic, this could be a sign of overdose and is an emergency. Call 911; there is a med called Narcan (naloxone) which can be used to reverse the effect.

Another pain med: You might want to try using another pain killer like NSAIDs or use another opioid. If it's an overdose go to ER. They may administer Narcan (naloxone) and other meds for resuscitation. Meds such as pro vigil or neuvigil may help keep people awake if opioids are causing drowsiness.
