Several: It could be a bruise or hemorrhage (often associated with purple green discoloration). It could be an infection (often red, warm and tender). It could be fibrocystic disease (often comes and goes with your menstrual cycle). Cancer tends not to be painful, but you definitely want an expert to look at your breasts.
