What: What are the side effects? Best to discuss this with your physician. Effexor (venlafaxine) can cause weird side effects and is especially prone to discontinuation syndrome. Dont stop it abruptly.

Maybe, maybe not: Effexor (venlafaxine) can be helpful for hot flashes, but it's often not a miracle, but talk to the doctor about tapering the dose up before you give up on it.

Depends: Abrupt stopping from a high dose can last longer. Most withdrawal symptoms last about 3 - 7 days.
A 45-year-old member asked:

Can ativan help with the side effects when you start taking effexor (venlafaxine)?

Dr. J. Kirk Clopton

Yes: Some people experience an increase in anxiety with starting effexor (venlafaxine). Other solutions could be starting with a smaller dose, taking Effexor (venlafaxine) with regular pudding or yogurt to delay stomach emptying or try something other than effexor (venlafaxine). Ativan can also be an alternative, but it should only be taken for a short time.

Maybe: Best to take it with food at about the same time every day. Keep track of your mood changes so you can report to your doctor whether or not it is changing. Watch also for any side effects.

Visual hallucination: Have you missed any doses of effexor (venlafaxine)? Do you take any other meds or supplements? Cases of visual hallucinations have been reported when pts miss doses or abruptly stop the medication. Several drugs (dextro-methorphan, triptans, meperidine, & others) in combination with Effexor (venlafaxine) can cause serotonin syndrome (toxicity) which includes hallucinations. See prescribing doc about this.
