Yes, temporarily: The use of a Foley catheter to drain the bladder during abdominal surgery is not uncommon. These are generally placed after anesthesia is given and removed within 24 hours after surgery. Occasionally the Foley catheter is not used, but if the patient cannot urinate after surgery, catheterization may be required once or twice until the patient can urinate on their own.
