It's doable: Situational depression generally resolves when the "situation" resolves. Endogenous depression, ie not primarily due to external events, is a biochemical disorder. Non-drug treatments can improve the chemical imbalances, including psychological counseling and mindfulness therapy (meditation + cognitive therapy) have been shown to restore chemical balance, eg on fmri and spect scans.

Behavior + Therapy: You can do some behavioral work right away. 1. Engage in regular physical activity like gym, running, or walking. 2. Do things you liked to do before, even if you don't feel like doing them now. 3. Force yourself to participate in activities with friends or family. 4. Prepare a weekly schedule of activities and stick to it. See a psychotherapist to help you make the changes you need.

Talk therapy is ofte: It is important that you get a physical to ensure that there is no underlying health issue. So make sure you see your pcp. Tell him you want to avoid medication if at all possible. Psychotherapy from a psychologist, or a counselor may be a great start. Firts you want to make sure that you get a thorough assessment. Talk therapy is often a viable option.
