Psychologists cannot prescribe medication but some do treat depression with cognitive or behavioral therapy. Consult one with a special interest & experience in treating depression. He/she will recognize whether the depression is serious enough to require medication and will refer you to or collaborate with a psychiatrist.

It is smart to want to get treatment for depression as it is a serious illness and can led to death (suicide). It can be treated by medications and by counseling or other behavioral/cognitive therapy separately, but often is better treated by a combination. Exercise can also help mood, and working to improve diet and leave off alcohol, etc. Good luck!
