Fecal incontinence: Some possible causes of fecal incontinence include dysfunction of the anal sphincter from previous vaginal delivery or surgical trauma; reduced internal anal sphincter resting pressure from diabetes; decreased rectal compliance from ulcerative or radiation proctitis; and fecal impaction. The cause of fecal incontinence may also be unknown, resulting from denervation of pelvic floor muscles.
