Possible infection: Redness and pin are 2 of the cardinal signs that you may have an infection in the toe. See a foot doctor to find out if it is . Sometimes you can get a foreign body in the toes ( splinter etc) that becomes iflamed as well. There are certain forms of arthritis ( e.g. Psoriatic) that present with one swollen painful toe.
