Yes: If one does not wear the retainers as prescribed by the orthodontist than teeth will slowly start to move back in its original positions. This is not age related.

Yes and No: Teeth can relapse after orthodontic care.. That's why it is important that you wear a retainer. Over time, our bodies can change, and your teeth can shift. The relapse is not due to your age, the natural shifting is.

Absolutely: Moving a tooth through bone is not like sealing a steel post into concrete. Bone is a living changing tissue. Teeth will move in relation to the forces placed upon them. Elastic fibers in there gum tissues want to pull teeth back toward their original alignment. Want stability after braces, wear retainers exactly as directed. If not you will through away time, effort, and money.

Wear your retainers: Not many things are forever. Everything in your body changes so after orthodontic treatment teeth will most likely move. It will happen for adults and children, no difference. Bigger changes bigger relapse. Using retainers (either fixed or removable) will help keep the correction and protect that nice new smile from changing.

Relapse: After braces are removed you should definitely wear retainers. Many different things may have caused your original misalignment and some of those may still be present (breathing patterns, parafunctional habits, muscle attachments). After wearing retainers for a while you will be able to judge how often they will need to be worn. You will be able to feel tooth movement before you can see it.
