Risk factors.: One should have all ones cardiovascular risk factors checked, including weight, waist measurement, lifestyle/exercise, hemoglobin a1c, homocysteine, bp, lipids and ones medical and family history, to enable one to decide whether diet and exercise alone would be enough. Statin therapy might be appropriate but one needs to look at the total picture.

Diet and exercise: If you are overweight, you should work on getting down to ideal weight. Change your diet to minimize fat intake and increase grains and vegies. Regular exercise can be very helpful. If cholesterol numbers are not improving in 6 weeks, see your doctor about adding a statin medication.
